Ethernet Wiring Diagram (large)

My wife and I just built a new house and during construction, I ran Cat6 cable to several spots in the house. My modem is a Hitron modem from Rogers Ontario, Canada. It’s located in my basement, I have about 10 different locations in my house that have Cat6 cabling. I haven’t experienced the most optimal results from my humble little network and was wondering if there is anything that the good people of this community can help me with in terms of setup. I have my wireless connections turned off on my hitron router it’s not in bridge mode and i’ve hardwired the AC to this. I have also connected a TP-Link 8 port switch to help distribute the internet load to the other hardwired connections.

That’s exactly what I’d use in my house Once you’ve mounted your wafers and terminated all the CAT5, it’s very easy to connect. The Phone out will go to all of the first pairs of the CAT5, just make sure you turn the black dial so your punchdown tool doesn’t cut, only at your last pair do you want it to cut. Then for the modem, just run another jumper from the POTS splitter to the second pair. That bix block will work. I’m not knocking it. It’s just not as flexible as what notfred and I am suggesting and since the OP is working with a clean new setup, why not make it easier for years to come.

Doing your own telephone wiring Note: I’m not familiar with the phone wiring conventions outside the U. In years gone past, it was the responsibility of the phone company not only to bring phone service to your house but to do the phone wiring within your house as well. This is no longer the case. When you order phone service to your house, the local phone company installs a network interface device, a sturdy grey plastic box usually mounted either in your basement or on an outside wall.

You can do your inside wiring yourself, or you can pay the local phone company or a third party such as an electrician to do it for you. Doing residential phone wiring is easy, however, and the local phone company’s charges for this service are steep. Even if you have to buy wire and modular jacks, you’re going to come out way ahead if you do your own work. Installing extra lines can be a problem if you rent an apartment in a multi-unit building. The wiring between the network interface device and the apartment is not the phone company’s responsibility, so you’ll have to work out with your landlord who’s going to do the in-between wiring if you need additional lines.

Your landlord may not want you to do the wiring for fear you don’t know what you’re doing; but the landlord may also object to picking up the tab if the phone company does the work.

What is the importance of cable gauge and how does it affect performance? Cable Gauge To understand the importance of gauge in the world of cables, we must first understand what goes inside them. Not what components they are made of, but what they actually carry through them. In the cable industry, it is referred to as current flow of electrons that runs throughout the wire. Imagine a flow of water that runs through a pipe.

The wider the pipe is, the more water runs through it in shorter time. How does that translate to cables? Resistance is how many electrons make it through the cable and do not evaporate. With a thinner cable, there is less flow and heat buildup, which causes the electrons to dissipate. The wider the cable, the easier it is for the electrons to pass through it. A 23AWG cable is 0.

Notice the lower the gauge — the higher the thickness. By doing so, resistance is automatically reduced over the cable. The simple answer is no.

I would assume you’ve installed quite a few of them. I guess what I’m trying to say is that when I think of where a PTZ would be used is on a pole, some where high up, or a large area that needs watching with the ability to zoom in on something interesting. So the cable runs I’m thinking they would be longer.

When the tech came, he attached a cat5 cable to an existing phone line in my daughter’s room and ran it to this little box which he hardwired in. On the other side of the box was a regular phone line jack. From the little box, a normal phone line was ran to the modem. I recently dropped new cat6 lines all over my home and now I want to replace the cat5 cable that he installed with a cat6 and move it to another phone jack in the kitchen.

I already ran a cat6 line to this location, just need to connect it to the phone line. Problem is that the phone jack in my daughter’s room is different than the one in the kitchen. What wires from the new cat6 line would I need to connect to this new phone jack? Would I use the same wiring scheme that the tech use to connect the cat5 line to the little box, or since I’m now using a cat6 line would I use a different scheme? This is the old phone line where the tech connected the cat5 line to.

The bottom two are the ones he connected.

Here are links to both for reference: I have been extremely pleased with the results. I currently have my Squeezebox, Blu-Ray player and Xbox hooked up to the bridge. One benefit to this is that even though some of these legacy devices support wireless, it is older By wiring them to the bridge, they get the benefit of much higher bandwidth without having to buy new adapters when available or upgrading to next-gen equipment.

Setup is a breeze because the products are from the same Mfr and are designed to work together seamlessly. I am able to consistently stream HD video without a hiccup. This assures that the entire 5G band is reserved for devices connected to the bridge. I should point out that this is probably NOT a solution for every environment.

Because I have a direct line of site—window to window—from the router to the access point, there is nothing in the way to interfere with the signal.
