Maimonides click to play it. Question by author Lorvanwa. God has no definable attributes Maimonides believed that God’s Will and Wisdom are the same thing, since God has no definable attributes. To the perception of man, love and judgement are opposite emotions or actions of God. But within the Divine realm they are the same. Rabbi Daniel Matt compared this idea to a lit candle, from which a multitude of other candles were lit. Though some shone brighter than others, some flickering, others steady, they were in essence the same flame, because they all shared the same source. The same can be said of God’s perceived attributes. They are a bright light, it is the human perception that offers color and hue. In God, all exists in perfect Oneness.

It is a great mitzvah to help a young man or woman find his or her match. According to the Midrash, G-d Himself works on making matches for three hours every day. In fact, G-d was the very first shadchan (between Adam and Chava). In addition, when G-d gave the Torah to the Jewish people, He did it.
Those of you who’ve visited our store know that we offer one of the largest collections of Judaica gifts in the world. However, what you may not know is that our business is founded on the same Jewish traditions we celebrate with our customers daily. Armed with just a small collection of Judaica gifts and specialty items, our founder, Louise, set up shop. It wasn’t long before business boomed. So she opened up another booth. These two booths turned into three. The three booths turned to four.
Eventually, Louise’s success enabled her to open up a full-fledged store at the back of the mall. The store flourished—and not just because of the heavy tourist traffic or Traditions’ huge assortment of Jewish gifts. Though a customer may walk in for a mezuzah pendant or a silver-plated menorah, they’d find themselves lingering to share memories or swap stories with Louise.

The practice[ edit ] In strictly Orthodox Jewish circles, dating is limited to the search for a marriage partner. Both sides usually the singles themselves, parents, close relatives or friends of the persons involved make inquiries about the prospective partner, e. A shidduch often begins with a recommendation from family members, friends or others who see matchmaking as a mitzvah , or commandment.
Some engage in it as a profession and charge a fee for their services. Usually a professional matchmaker is called a shadchan , but anyone who makes a shidduch is considered the shadchan for it. After the match has been proposed, the prospective partners meet a number of times to gain a sense of whether they are right for one another.
It is no coincidence that Yom Kippur and 15th AV served as occasions for matchmaking for the young men and women of Yerushalayem. These two days represent the anniversaries of the respective betrothal and marriage of Hashem and the Jewish People.
Blumberg] Is one allowed to wed a newly religious person? See Rambam Hilchot Teshuvah, chapter 7 , who says that if someone becomes religious, that person is not second class. Repentance blots out everything. Yehoshua Bin Nun wed Rahav, who was entirely corrupt from head to toe Zevachim b. Yet she repented and converted to Judaism and he married her. Eight kings and prophets emerged from that match Megilah 14a. Is one allowed to wed a girl if one of her parents is problematic? I cannot answer since I am biased. Rabbi Akiva , on the other hand, was of the opinion that they were all given on Mount Sinai, repeated in the Tent of Meeting, and declared a third time by Moses before his death.
According to the Midrash , all divine commandments were given on Mount Sinai, and no prophet could add any new ones. Rabbinical mitzvot[ edit ] The Biblical mitzvot are referred to in the Talmud as mitzvot d’oraita , translated as commandments of the Law Torah. In contradistinction to this are rabbinical commandments, referred to as mitzvot d’rabbanan. Mitzvot d’rabbanan are a type of takkanah.

Ethnographic studies of Orthodox Jewish women are one of my favorite sub-genres. Can an academic researcher really “get” the world I belong to, I always wonder. I don’t know if a researcher can ever attain the insight of an insider, but certainly some come closer than others. In “Mitzvah Girls,” while I think Ayala Fader got some things, I thi This review will probably end up being edited once my husband reads the book and hashes it out with me but in the meantime, here are my first impressions.
It’s hard to judge the book, though, because while “Mitzvah Girls” is pretty heavy on technical details and descriptions, I had a hard time understanding what conclusions Fader drew, if any, and how the whole book actually hung together if indeed it did. Fader, a secular Jew, spent a great deal of time observing Boro Park Hasidic women and girls in their homes, at school, and at various activities and events. She describes her time spent in Boro Park as “constraining and stifling,” adding that she “often breathed a sigh of relief as the subway crossed the Manhattan bridge” on her way home p.
Fader focuses on the socialization of Hasidic girls from an early age to “fit in” i. She devotes a great deal of detail to linguistic idiosyncrasies evident in “Hasidic English” and how the use of language reflects Hasidic girls’ desire to sound and present oneself as “with it” i. Finally, Fader discusses laws pertaining to the body such as those governing female modesty and attire and the laws of family purity which regulate the marital relationship.
She also charts the system of categories for families involved in matchmaking e. As such, I can’t say for certain whether, and to what degree, Fader described the culture accurately. Nothing struck me as glaringly inaccurate, although I found some of her translations from Hebrew and Yiddish imprecise and wondered whether she had them, or much else in the book, checked by a Hasidic or even simply Orthodox person.
She did mention that some of her interviewees read parts of the book and requested that selected material be omitted; Fader respected some requests and overrode others.

The room was decorated with vibrant splashes of red, inluding rose centerpieces. As the night wound down, love and laughter were in the air. She was pleased with the non-conformity of the occasion, and that her attractive brood was at the center of it all. With their arms around each other, Dusty explained: But when they first met 29 years ago, their courtship could have been the plotline of a sitcom.
